Essentially, cubital tunnel syndrome is the lesser-known cousin of carpal tunnel. Both can be very painful and affect your ability to function.

While carpal tunnel is caused by pressure on the median nerve in your hand and wrist, cubital tunnel is caused by damage to the ulnar nerve that winds around the inner side of your elbow.

What causes cubital tunnel syndrome?

Sometimes, it’s nothing more than problems with your anatomy. You may have anomalies in your bone or nerve that lead to the problem.

Most of the time, however, cubital tunnel is caused by pressure on the elbow (often caused by leaning on one arm while working). It can also be caused by repeated stretching of the nerve, which can happen when you keep your elbow bent for long periods of time.

Trauma, especially the kind that comes from repeated use, can also lead to cubital tunnel syndrome. Just like carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel syndrome is often a workplace injury that occurs over time due to repetitive motion.

Can cubital tunnel syndrome be treated?

Treatment can include physical therapy, rest, ice, the use of braces and supports and surgery — but all of that can be costly. It may also mean significant periods of time where you cannot work or a reduction in your hours.
