A.C.&S., Inc. Asbestos Trust

A.C.&S., Inc. is an insulation company from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. For decades, A.C.&S contracted with the federal government to provide asbestos insulation to the United States Navy. The asbestos insulation was used to wrap pipes and boilers on naval vessels, so that heat would not diffuse and cause any harm to the crew.

Unfortunately, the asbestos insulation was far more dangerous than the heat from the pipes. A.C.&S.’ products placed the men and women serving our country in danger of deadly illnesses, such as asbestosis and the aggressive cancer called mesothelioma. Over decades, thousands of marine workers, shipyard laborers, and naval crews were exposed to the toxic asbestos. Additionally, the asbestos fibers remain in a person’s lungs for years and symptoms may not develop for decades. Thus, A.C.&S.’ victims might live for decades without knowing of the deadly injury they sustained.

As early as the 1920s, physicians recognized that exposure to asbestos caused severe sickness when asbestosis was identified by British medical journals. At the same time, insurance companies in the United States and Canada stopped selling life insurance to asbestos workers. Moreover, safer substitutes for most asbestos uses were known as early as the 1930s.

Nevertheless, A.C.&S did not stop using asbestos until the late 1970s. Even then, A.C.&S.’ action was in response to federal regulations restricting the use of asbestos rather than the danger of the mineral.

One case, of note, involved workers in Mississippi. These individuals worked at a company that bought asbestos products manufactured by A.C.&S., but did not deal with A.C.&S. directly. The case went to trial and the six workers were awarded a total of $84 million.
