The ASR Hip System?
The ASR™ XL Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System were recalled on August 24, 2010. The hip is the place where the top of the thighbone, the femur, connects to the pelvic bone. The femur has a rounded end that fits into a concave area in the pelvic bone. It is called a ball and socket joint because it literally is a round shaped bone that fits into a socket allowing for rotation. First available in July of 2003, the DePuy ASR, manufactured by Johnson and Johnson, is made of a metal cup and socket used for hip replacement or resurfacing for individuals with serious arthritis or joint diseases.
Approximately 93,000 people have had these implants and many of them experienced difficulties because of the device. Those individuals who need revision surgery notice symptoms:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Problems walking
Some of these problems may originate from issues with the DePuy ASR medical device. Individuals have found that the device may loosen and not remain attached to the bone. In other patients, the bone actually fractures around the implant. Dislocation can also occur, where the two parts of the implant move in opposition to each other so they are no longer aligned.
